Learning Methods
Learning Methods
A learning method is a method used by smart teachers to implement a pre-designed lesson plan in the form of concrete, practical activities to achieve learning objectives. In their book "Teaching and Learning Strategies," Luluk Suryani and Leo Agung differentiate between learning strategies and learning methods. Learning strategies are still conceptual, and implementing them in the classroom requires various learning methods. It can be said that a strategy is a plan of operation for achieving something, while a method is a way of achieving it .
1. Case Study Method
The case study method can be used in active learning. This method utilizes specific situations or cases that can provide students with meaningful and useful learning. A skilled teacher can provide a story about the theme or concept being studied. Students can then discuss the topic and conduct analysis, synthesis, and evaluation based on the case or problem being studied.
2. Demonstration Method
Students are given the opportunity to directly interact with the material being studied, then demonstrate it in front of the class. This learning method can show how students do something, which is then observed and discussed in front of the class.
3. Discovery Method
The discovery method encourages students to discover new knowledge or concepts for themselves. Smart teachers must motivate students to draw their own conclusions about the concepts or formulas being studied.
4. Jigsaw Method
The jigsaw method requires students to learn in groups. Smart teachers can encourage students to collaborate within groups. Each group member is tasked with understanding and deepening a specific part of the topic being studied. Then, each group member combines their learning to form a coherent understanding. This type of learning method encourages students to listen and learn from one another.
5. Group Discussion Method
This learning method is engaging because it encourages students to interact and help each other understand differing opinions that may arise during the activity. In addition to understanding the lesson, smart teachers can also train students to respect the opinions of others through this group discussion method.
6. Role Playing Method
This method is a type of learning method designed to solve problems by
asking students to play specific roles. A smart teacher can provide students
with a topic or case study.
For example, a smart teacher presents the case of a village bridge collapsing due to heavy rain. Then, students are assigned roles. Some play the role of the neighborhood head, a resident, and so on.
7. Project Assignment Method
The project assignment method is a highly challenging learning method. Students must conduct research, experiment, and often go directly into the field to make observations. This method requires students to produce a specific product within a specified time. Students can complete projects individually or in groups. This activity trains students to think critically and creatively.
8. Work Visit Method
The field trip learning method, or work visit, is usually implemented
after the project assignment learning method. This type of learning method
allows students to see each other's work. They can observe and learn to ask
questions. Furthermore, smart teachers can encourage students to provide
constructive comments and suggestions. Meanwhile, students whose work is
visited or viewed can learn to answer questions and respond to comments and
suggestions productively.
Learning Style
What is a Learning Style?
- It refers to an individual's way of processing,
retaining information, and understanding each subject.
Learning Style Types
1.
Auditory Learning Style
Children with auditory learning styles typically understand and process new information through hearing or sound. This means they tend to easily remember learning through audio or verbal explanations from teachers or parents.
You can apply several methods to the auditory learning style. For example, using rhythm or music as a memorization tool, holding group discussions with children, and utilizing lectures via podcasts.
2.
Visual Learning Style
Children with a visual learning style will focus more on
vision. They usually understand more easily by seeing videos, pictures,
diagrams and infographics.
You can use media such as learning videos, mind mapping,
conducting presentations, preparing real objects, making colorful notes,
picture or graphic flashcards and sticking posters for important notes as
reminders.
3. Kinesthetic Learning Style
Children with a kinesthetic learning style tend to be more sociable and social with everyone. They often make a positive impression on everyone they meet, wherever they are.
They prefer participating in hands-on activities and learning by doing rather than sitting still, watching, and listening. Children with a kinesthetic learning style tend to be more comfortable learning both indoors and outdoors.
This learning style also often produces children who become athletes, influencers, and actors. This is because they want to learn not just by listening, watching, or reading, but by directly practicing.
4.
Verbal (Linguistic) Learning Style
Children with a verbal learning
style are highly skilled at using words, both orally and in writing. They
easily absorb information through reading books, listening to stories, or
speaking.
These children often enjoy discussions, storytelling, or creative writing, and typically have a rich vocabulary. They also tend to be good at explaining ideas clearly.
5.
Logical-Mathematical Learning Style
Children with this learning style enjoy logic, numbers, and patterns. They tend to think analytically, enjoy problem-solving, and are interested in cause-and-effect relationships.
These children often enjoy
activities that involve calculations, strategy, or reasoning. They also enjoy
systematically grouping information.
6.
Social (Interpersonal) Learning Styles
Children with a social learning style learn best through interactions with others. They are good at communicating, working in teams, and understanding others' emotions.
These children are often good
speakers and enjoy collaborative activities. They also tend to learn from
others' perspectives.
7.
Solitary Learning Style (Intrapersonal)
Children with a solitary learning style prefer to learn independently. They tend to be introspective, reflective, and have a good understanding of themselves.
These children are focused on
personal goals and are often more comfortable working alone than in groups.
8.
Naturalist Learning Style
Children with a naturalist
learning style have a strong interest in nature and their surroundings. They
learn best when they're outdoors or when lessons relate to nature, such as
plants, animals, or environmental phenomena.
9.
Existential Learning Style
Children with an existential
learning style are interested in big questions about life, meaning, and
purpose. They often reflect on things like philosophy, religion, or life
values.
