Learning Methods

A learning method is a method used by smart teachers to implement a pre-designed lesson plan in the form of concrete, practical activities to achieve learning objectives. In their book "Teaching and Learning Strategies," Luluk Suryani and Leo Agung differentiate between learning strategies and learning methods. Learning strategies are still conceptual, and implementing them in the classroom requires various learning methods. It can be said that a strategy is a plan of operation for achieving something, while a method is a way of achieving it .

1. Case Study Method

The case study method  can be used in active learning. This method utilizes specific situations or cases that can provide students with meaningful and useful learning.  A skilled teacher can provide a story about the theme or concept being studied. Students can then discuss the topic and conduct analysis, synthesis, and evaluation based on the case or problem being studied.

2. Demonstration Method

Students are given the opportunity to directly interact with the material being studied, then demonstrate it in front of the class. This learning method can show how students do something, which is then observed and discussed in front of the class.

3. Discovery Method

The discovery method encourages students to discover new knowledge or concepts for themselves. Smart teachers must motivate students to draw their own conclusions about the concepts or formulas being studied. 

4. Jigsaw Method

The jigsaw method requires students to learn in groups. Smart teachers can encourage students to collaborate within groups. Each group member is tasked with understanding and deepening a specific part of the topic being studied. Then, each group member combines their learning to form a coherent understanding. This type of learning method encourages students to listen and learn from one another.

5. Group Discussion Method

This learning method is engaging because it encourages students to interact and help each other understand differing opinions that may arise during the activity. In addition to understanding the lesson, smart teachers can also train students to respect the opinions of others through this group discussion method.

6. Role Playing Method

This method is a type of learning method designed to solve problems by asking students to play specific roles. A smart teacher can provide students with a topic or case study. 

For example, a smart teacher presents the case of a village bridge collapsing due to heavy rain. Then, students are assigned roles. Some play the role of the neighborhood head, a resident, and so on. 

7. Project Assignment Method

The project assignment method is a highly challenging learning method. Students must conduct research, experiment, and often go directly into the field to make observations. This method requires students to produce a specific product within a specified time. Students can complete projects individually or in groups. This activity trains students to think critically and creatively.

8. Work Visit Method

The field trip learning method, or work visit, is usually implemented after the project assignment learning method. This type of learning method allows students to see each other's work. They can observe and learn to ask questions. Furthermore, smart teachers can encourage students to provide constructive comments and suggestions. Meanwhile, students whose work is visited or viewed can learn to answer questions and respond to comments and suggestions productively.
